The Political and Economic Influence of the 16+1 Initiative on CEE Countries: Focus on Visegrad Group
Wang, Ziyi ; Semerák, Vilém (advisor) ; Akdogan, Idil (referee) ; Paulus, Michal (referee)
This investigates the political and economic influence of the 16+1 Initiative on Central Eastern Europe countries, particularly on the Visegrad Group countries. In the recent decade, this initiative, which serves as an economic framework between CEE countries and China, has garnered significant interest in academia and within the policy dimension due to its probable economic and political implications in the region. This study, therefore, investigates the multifaceted nature and impact of the 16+1 initiative by analysing the economic influence on FDI inflows and bilateral trade between the Visegrad Group countries and China. It also delves into the political influence of the initiative in the region. To accomplish these objectives, this study conducts an econometric and comparative analysis of the existing FDI and trade flows data from the Eurostat database, World Bank Databases, academic journals and publications databases, and the United Nations Comrade Database. Two models are developed to aid the econometric data analysis: the fixed-effect panel model and the gravity model for trade flow. The findings of this study reveal a statistically significant positive influence of the Initiative on FDI inflows to the CEE countries (Visegrad Group) from China, highlighting that participation in the initiative is...
A Gravity Approach to Modelling German Exports: The Role of Institutions
Hadrová, Petra ; Bobková, Božena (advisor) ; Havránek, Tomáš (referee)
The purpose of this thesis is to implement the gravity model approach to identify and quantify determinants of bilateral trade flows of Germany and its trading partners, while focusing on the effect of institutions. Based on various gravity model techniques (clustered pooled OLS, Poisson Pseudo-Maximum Likelihood estimation, Hausman and Taylor estimation and Instrumental Variables regression), we have confirmed that the quality of institutions have a signifiant and positive effect on German exports. Depending on model specification and estimation technique, some institutions seem to effect German export more than others. We see the Hausman and Taylor estimator advisable for addressing endogeneity of institutions.
Russian foreign policy and eastern vector
Literáková, Adéla ; Kolenovská, Daniela (advisor) ; Svoboda, Karel (referee)
The main goal of this bachelor thesis Russian foreign policy and eastern vector is to find out how much Russian strategy in Asia contributed to fulfil stated political goal - to reduce power of the United States of America in the world. In the middle of the 1990's, the Russian foreign policy changed the direction from the western oriented policy into the multivectoral one. The most important role got the eastern vector - mainly India and People's Republic of China. Russia considered the good relations with those countries as a condition to enforce and to protect its national interests. The main political goal of Russia was to limit the power of the United Stated of America in international affairs. The first chapter presents the approach of Russian foreign policy in the 1990's and describes why Russia started to aim at eastern vector. The second chapter explains the Russian policy in Asia. The third chapter describes in detail relations between Moscow and Beijing and the cause of the growing importance of People's Republic of China in Russian foreign policy in 1990's.
Exploring the Interaction between Foreign Direct Investment and International trade with a Focus on CEECs.
Zhang, Ling ; Szobi, Pavel (advisor) ; Figueira, Filipa (referee) ; Jeřábek, Petr (referee)
Our research reveals the impact of foreign direct investment on the intensity of bilateral trade in the Central Eastern European (CEE) region, focusing on countries of Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, Slovakia, Slovenia, and Estonia (CEE-6). Previous literature and research results indicate that there is a complementary or substitute relationship between FDI and trade. However, the studies of this subject on the CEE region are scarce. Our study employs the gravity model to analyze the impact of FDI on bilateral trade with panel data of each country from 2005 to 2019. Based on the panel data, we investigate the commercial integration among CEE-6 and with main EU commercial partners. Our results suggest a prevalence of complementary relationships in Hungary, Poland, Slovakia, and Slovenia, yet each country demonstrates the relationship through different facts. The complementary relationship is attributed to the prevalent vertical FDI in CEECs, especially in the automotive industry. However, Estonia displays a substitutive relationship between outward FDI and trade. Moreover, we find the commercial integration only exists among the Visegrad group.

Six Essays on Meta-Regression Analysis
Havránková, Zuzana ; Dědek, Oldřich (advisor) ; Cahlík, Tomáš (referee) ; Babecký, Jan (referee) ; Fidrmuc, Jarko (referee)
This dissertation thesis consists of six papers on macroeconomics, international economics, and energy economics. All the papers are tied together by the use of meta-regression analysis, which is essential for the derivation of robust policy-relevant conclusions from often conflicting results presented in the empirical literature. I use meta-analysis to quantitatively synthesize the reported research results on a given topic, correct the literature for publication selection bias, and filter out the effect of various misspecifications present in some primary studies. My results can be summarized as follows: 1) The elasticity of intertemporal substitution in consumption, a key input to all dynamic models in finance and macroeconomics, varies significantly across countries. The differences can be explained by the level of stock market participation, when countries with higher participation exhibit larger values of the elasticity; the mean reported elasticity is 0.5. 2) The effect of borders on international trade, which most authors find to be surprisingly large, can be explained away by innovations in methodology introduced in the last decade. When these innovations are taken into account jointly, the border effect disappears for developed countries, and is relatively small for developing countries. 3) When...
Gravity Model of International Trade in Alcoholic Beverages in Selected EU Countries
Pecka, Marek ; Arltová, Markéta (advisor) ; Bubáková, Petra (referee)
Panel data analysis is the modern approach of statistical and econometric modeling. The aim of the thesis is to estimate the gravity model of international trade in alcoholic beverages in the form of bilateral trade flow depending on the gross domestic product and other associated variables that facilitate trading. The data have a panel structure. Based on the results of panel unit root tests the stationarity of variables in the panel and the expected long-term relationship between the analyzed variables are tested. Gravity model is assuming the existence of long-term relationships built through various methods, such as pooling OLS estimate, fixed and random effects models, cointegrated regression DOLS and FMOLS. Cointegration relationship is verified by Pedroni panel test.
Political-economical envrionment of the Russian Federation and its impact on business relations with commercial entities in the Czech Republic
Michálková, Markéta ; Ševčík, Miroslav (advisor) ; Bekisheva, Irina (referee)
Russia is due to its size, population, rich raw material base and growth potential one of the leading global economies. In this paper I analyze the political and economical environment of the Russian Federation, which predetermines a potential of each sector and the whole economy to affect the global economy. At the same time this paper deals with foreign trade relations between Russia and the Europian Union and the Czech Republic, its development and prediction to the future. The second part is focused on bilateral trade between the Russia Federation. Experiences of the Czech company and the Chamber of Trade and Industry for CIS Countries from trading in Russia provide a basis for analysis of positive and negative aspects of this cooperation and give the options for its improvement.
